Abram has been attempting to ride a "typical" style trike for well over a year. Although he could at times pedal the trike very short distances, it was always incredibly difficult for him to stay on the seat (due to hypotonia) and to pedal for very long. In addition, steering the trike always seemed to prove to be a problem area as well. He seemed to understand the concept but with the way the handle bars were, he literally couldn't steer the trike AND pedal AND remain on the seat properly.
Last week, our Occupational Therapist introduced him to a Rifton adaptive tricycle and the difference was INCREDIBLE. This trike gives him the back and core support he needs while keeping him in-place with straps, it places the peddles underneath him at 90 degree angle vs having his feet more in front of him and the steering wheel is a shallow oval shape making it easy for him to grasp and steer. I was shocked when I saw him peddle it and ride it right down the hallway on just his third trip on this trike. The sense of independence and pride shown across his face and in that beautiful smile of his. I couldn't have been more proud. Look at him go!!!
