In February his progress at school plateaued and in March it plummeted while his self-injurious behaviors skyrocketed right along with his aggressions towards his peers and his aide.
We sought medical help. Had multiple appointments searching for an acute illness to treat. We sought help from an autism specialist who for only the second time in his decades-long medical career, suggested we try an opiate to relieve Abram from his perceived pain. We declined this treatment and were supported in this decision by his primary care doctor.
Instead, we chose to add in more of his cannabis oil adding in an additional dose of CBD and we raised his THC to just 8mg at night as well. We would like to add more but with the cost of the oil and the fear of running out - we have to use it sparingly as we are forced to get his medicine out-of-state since Iowa's program is still not quite up-and-running and even when it is - with the current legislation - we WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OBTAIN the ratios of CBD:THC that we need to give our son relief.
Please, just take a moment to let that sink in. Our law prevents my son from getting access to the appropriate dosages of his medication. The ONE THING that has helped him progress and learn. The ONE THING that has helped his little brain quiet enough that he can finally say "mom" at the age of 5.
Imagine writing countless letters to legislators for more than half of your child's life begging them for help. Imagine only getting a handful of responses and how the majority of those tell you that they don't want to help you.
Here we are again - at the end of another legislative session with the Iowa House Majority not wanting to make the appropriate steps to not only help my son but thousands of your fellow Iowans get relief from their pain and suffering. Imagine if it were your child or someone close to you who needed help and they couldn't get it?
Please take a look at the results we have gotten by simply adding in a third dose of CBD and increasing Abram's THC. If we were able, we'd love to be able to give him a ratio that is closer to a 1:1 ratio but Iowa law won't allow it. Imagine how much better Abram could be doing if he were allowed to access medical cannabis legally?
His "Aggression by Time Slot" graph shows that at his worst, Abram hit his aide and his peers OVER FIFTY TIMES in the short 2.5 hours that he was at school. Since adding in the noon dose of his CBD:THC oil it has decreased to an average of 4-6 instances. This not only affects Abe - but it affects his teachers, his sweet aide who works hard to help him and his friends. Can you imagine the social isolation he will get if his aggressions towards his peers continued? It breaks my heart. I want him to have friends. I don't want kids to be scared of him.
There is going to be a press conference on Tuesday at 3pm at the Capitol. If you want to come stand with us and show your support - it would be greatly appreciated. It is our last ditch effort to get the legislators to change the law so when our son's medicine is FINALLY available in Iowa come Christmas - we can get what he NEEDS here at home and we won't have to continue to break multiple state and federal laws to get him the medicine that he needs. If you want to come - please message me for the room number.
Will you please write a letter? The link below will give you background of the bills, sample emails and talking points. http://www.iowansforsafeaccess.org/how-to-help.html
